Songkran (Thai New Year) occurs at the hottest time of year, so it’’s only right that it’’s celebrated using water ? or more accurately, by throwing water. Using water guns and balloons, complete strangers can find themselves on opposing sides of fierce water battles! Those celebrating will also go to a wat to donate food and money to the monks, bringing luck and prosperity for the New Year. Loi Krathong ? ?festival of lights? is one of the most beautiful festivals of the year. Held on the night of the full moon, candles are placed within lotus shaped banana leaf boats and are subsequently lit, before setting sail on the river. Lumpini Park sees many people releasing their lanterns, creating a floating parade of lights serenely bobbing up and down on the water.

The King’’s birthday is always huge cause for celebration. Thais revere their king and there is a month of events leading up to the sovereign’’s birthday culminating in a motorcade procession through the streets of Bangkok, and an elaborate firework display. Thousands of well-wishers come out to witness the procession and show their devotion with Sanam Luang being one of the best places to catch all the action.

Convert to clubbing in Ibiza

The vast amount of clubs that were available and the sheer abundance of things to do in this small place were absolutely perfect for a bunch of teenage lads. Now, I am not for a moment advocating this as a holiday destination if you want a bit of peace and quiet; judging from the size of the sound systems they have in these clubs I”d guess the nearest tranquil haven would be about two hundred nautical miles away, but as a place to go to completely lose yourself it is exactly what the doctor ordered.
On top of all this hedonistic revelry is the far more frugal minded knowledge that we got an absolutely fantastic deal. We went on one of the budget airlines for a staggeringly cheap fare that I seem to remember ended working out under ?30 each, so even the most skint amongst our party could tag along. With hotel prices and quality ranging from ?26 a night for 2* basics to around ?100 (although sometimes a great deal less) for a more luxurious experience, it was an ideal place.
We slummed it somewhat, but if you had even the smallest bit more cash you can get some really rather good hotel rooms for not much more. Also, through its reputation as a clubbers paradise the travel insurance deals were readily available and extremely good value for money.
However, Ibiza is not completely typecast. If you are looking for beautiful scenery rather than heavy partying, then you can visit the large portions of the island which are protected from commercial development and registered as U.N. World Heritage sites and the landscape is often used by companies and artists for photographic and film shoots. The truth of the matter is though, that Ibiza’’s tourism only really thrives off one thing and one thing only and if you happen to be a teenager with a penchant for some really loud club music then I really cannot think of a better, cheaper place on the planet.

The Excitement of Carnival
The beaches in Aruba might be the icing on the cake but the true spirit of Aruba is celebrated in its Carnival. This year’s celebration of 2010 is expected to be one of the most memorable and exciting carnivals yet. The carnival is adored by visitors and residents alike. It means weeks of spectacular events that are topped off with brilliantly decorated floats, great music, elaborate costumes and torchlight parades that will fill visitors with delight.
The food, live entertainment, parades and special events are just a few of the wonderful things to see at Aruba’s Carnival. It is one of the most celebrated events in Aruba and the only place you will find Antillean “tumba” music, played by steel bands of the English Caribbean with the salsa beats of Latin countries. There are also marching bands.
The carnival is a two-month long celebration that culminates with the all-day parade on Sunday with everyone joining in the festivities, all decked out in costumes. Traditional dances and music are performed to petition the gods of nature to grant health and fertility to the plants, animals and, of course, people.

Jamaica, Trinidad, Barbados, Haiti, Dominica, Cuba, St. Thomas and the Netherlands Antilles are also known to throw some wild and outrageously fun carnivals but none as highly spoken of as Aruba’s.
The colors of the parade are almost so bright that they can be blinding to the eyes. The fabulous creations of the costumes that they put together are so amazing that they will literally take your breath away. The Aruba people take this Carnival very seriously and it shows in the way that they portray themselves during this celebration. Even the children are dressed in elaborate costumes and enjoy showing them off to viewers. The carnival represents the culture and unique diversity of the country and allows the people of Aruba to share their time-honored traditions with the rest of the world. The costumes, floats and dances are their way of showing how they celebrate life and their unique culture.
Although it seems like the party will never end, the grand finale of the carnival ends with Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday. On Shrove Tuesday, there are a giant parade, fireworks and the burning of the Rei Momo-an effigy that represents all that is evil to the Aruban people. They believe that by burning the Momo, they can rid themselves of any evil spirits that may try and consume them. This has been a tradition for centuries; it is still carried out today and taken very seriously by the people of Aruba.
